A BUSY WINTER!!
January through the end of March was a busy time for our students! From DanceMakers Convention to Spring Break, students have been rehearsing and learning their choreography for the upcoming recital, and more!
In January, Martell School of Dance took our largest group of students EVER to the DanceMakers, Inc. Convention in Pittsburgh, PA. We were thrilled with all the students who attended and who gave their all in each class that was offered! A special thanks goes out to Mr. Eric Prayner for assisting our students in a VERY successful Bob Evans Pie Fundraiser! Some of our students were able to sell enough pies and bread that their tuition was nearly covered!
Another special part of this dance convention is that our very own Miss Patience was able to join our dancers in classes and spend time with them. Patience was a part of the DMI Collective for the 2014-2015 season and it was wonderful to see her.
Throughout the convention, students are observed by the DMI esteemed faculty and some are offered scholarships for their performance in their classes. This year, we are pleased to announce that Alexis Baines, Luisa Lynch, and Molly Casino were offered scholarships to DanceMakers Nationals, in Myrtle Beach, SC this summer. Congrats to all of our dancers on such a successful and memorable experience. If you or your student are interested in participating in convention, please let us know. Students in class levels I – IV are invited to participate. A very special thanks to our wonderful parent chaperones for all your help during this trip!
We had an AMAZING group of students for the CANTON CHARGE/CLEVELAND CAVALIERS ARENA PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE!
February 26th and March 5th, 55 Martell Dancers lit up the basketball courts with an outstanding performance choreographed by Miss April! All our dancers looked awesome and we are so grateful to our families for participating in extra appearance. We hope that you all had a wonderful time and will participate again in the summer when we perform for the Akron Rubber Ducks! Mark your calendars for July 29th and start thinking about this extra hip hop piece being choreographed by MISS PATIENCE!
HOLIDAYS ARE ALL AROUND US!
Holiday Season, 2015
This Holiday season was a blast at Martell School of Dance!
Throughout the months of November and December, dancers prepared for our holiday show “The Music of the Mouse”, as well as rehearsed and performed at events with the Akron Symphony and Summit Mall’s “Breakfast with Santa” event.
Perhaps one of our biggest goals was raising over $1000 for the Project EdBear organization to help children who suffer of childhood cancer! We are so proud of our supportive community for their efforts and greatly appreciate their dedication and heartfelt donations on behalf of our studio to this wonderful and highly detrimental organization.
It’s a treat to be invited by Christopher Wilkins, Conductor of the Akron Symphony, to perform at the symphony’s annual Holiday Pop’s Performance, a tradition for families of the Akron and Northeast Ohio communities. Students Alexis Baines, Isabel Balana, and Molly Thomas performed twice this season. The first performance at The University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall and the second at the Medina Performing Arts Center.
This is our second year performing for Breakfast with Santa. This year, a few of our Kindergarten Ballerinas performed “Silent Night” and Miss Tammy’s Jazz I & II students performed “Christmas Soul”. Students led a parade with Santa through Summit Mall and provided the entertainment for the event which was tons of fun.
We finished out our Fall Season with our holiday dance concert, “The Music of the Mouse”. This show featured a special meet and greet session with “The Snow Queen” as well as a visit by “The Mouse” himself.
Students rehearsed in class and prepared this show in roughly 8-weeks! We are so proud of all our students for pulling this show together and we are ever so grateful for our families and community members who volunteered, attended the performance, and participated in raffling off baskets at the performance. We hope that you all enjoyed the show!
With the holiday season behind us, students are eager to begin learning their pieces for the Spring recital in May. You can guarantee that we will be as busy as ever with outreach endeavors, performances, and of course, rehearsals. For now, we feel simply blessed to share our passion with students and families throughout the Akron area brought together by the power of dance!
MARTELL DANCERS PERFORM FOR A CAUSE
We have been in session for just over two months, and already, our students have found themselves performing at community outreach events such as the Victory Gallop Benefit (September) and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.
We are grateful for our students, faculty, and parents who chose to dance in their spare time and participate in such meaningful events in our community. Special thanks to Colleen Smith and Kelley Gifford, our points of contact, for including dance as a feature at each event.
November marks Project Ed Bear month at Martell. This month, we encourage fundraising for the wonderful organization and hope to offer another successful donation from our studio at their gala auction on November 30th. Project Ed Bear is dedicated to helping and finding a cure for childhood cancer. For more information about their organization, please go to http://www.projectedbear.org/.
Coming up on December 11th, several of our students will have the opportunity to perform at EJ Thomas Hall alongside the Akron Symphony. Let us know if you are interested in purchasing tickets to this event. Flyers are being posted around both studios. You can download the flyer here: AKR_HomeHolidayAd_PolarExpress_FINAL.
With the holidays soon approaching, make sure you mark your calendar for our Holiday Show being held on December 19th at 2 & 6 pm at the Copley High School Auditorium. This performance will include students in Kindergarten and up as well as music from your favorite Disney holiday movies!
As always, we thank you for being a part of our studio. For information about arranging for Martell to perform at your event, please contact Rachel Yunker, Outreach Coordinator, at email@example.com.

Students to Perform for Akron Children’s Hospital 125th Year Celebration
On April 25th, nearly 20 of our students performed for the Children’s Hospital 125th year celebration. Our students danced beautifully as they presented four of the pieces from the upcoming June Recital, Angels Standing By, Turning Page, Shout and Feel It, and Wade in the Water. Special thanks to the students and parents for offering their time as Martell supports this wonderful hospital in the Akron community.
Sweeney Todd Takes Center Stage at The All Ohio Dance Festival
Saturday, April 18th the cast of Sweeney Todd (Jr. Modern Line, 2014) performed their piece at The 5th annual All Ohio Dance Festival held at Tri-C in Highland Hills. In addition to performing at the gala performance, dancers from studios across Ohio were invited to participate in a day of movement master classes and networking. This year, Miss Tammy instructed two classes, Lyrical & Salsa. We would like to congratulate our performers, Melina Stratton, Jace Lantz-Dennis, Abby Minear, Katie Ferguson, and Lenny Gasper for their fantastic performance. We would also like to thank the additional festival participants Olivia Oblak, Ava Stratton, and Izzy Prayner for their attendance in the master classes. Special thanks to our parents who helped throughout the day and into the evening.
We hope you all had a wonderful time and look forward to next year’s festival!
Tony Award Winning Choreographer, Adam Cates Sets 35th Year Celebration Piece!
We were thrilled to welcome back Mr. Adam Cates in February for a Broadway style workshop and to set a piece on our dancers. These students will perform the upbeat, inspiring number from the musical Memphis in our evening recital in June. Everyone is in for a treat!
Adam left our dancers and the entire community with a wonderful message:
“Martell is a supportive, safe, and loving environment for those students who walk through its doors–that is clear from the first moment. I love coming to Martell. The students display a wonderful work ethic and proper class etiquette. You would think that would be a given everywhere, but I assure you it is not. The teachers at Martell clearly celebrate the diversity within their walls and help each child to achieve his or her dance potential. They are not only teaching them the art of dance, but also the important life skills that will help the kids grow into productive and creative adults. Not everyone will pursue dance, but arts training prepares you for life!”
Cleveland Cavaliers & Canton Charge Performances – A great success!
On Wednesday, January 28th, the Martell dancers rocked the Cleveland Cavaliers halftime with their hip hop performance. BRAVO everyone! Miss April did a beautiful job with the choreography. The crowd went wild and the Cavs won the game! A few nights later, the dancers were back it, sharing their show-stopping energy with the Canton Chargers and once again, bringing down the house with excitement! We are all so proud of you!! Thank you to everyone who participated–especially to the parents who supported this performance opportunity for their child.
